India Confirms BrahMos Deal With Vietnam as Indonesia Agreement Nears Completion

India has confirmed a BrahMos missile agreement with Vietnam while negotiations with Indonesia are in the final stage, strengthening defence ties and expanding strategic partnerships across Asia.

India has taken another major step in expanding its defence exports, with officials confirming that a BrahMos missile agreement with Vietnam has already been finalized. At the same time, discussions with Indonesia are progressing rapidly and are believed to be nearing completion.

The announcement was made by Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh during a media interaction on the sidelines of the Shangri La Dialogue in Singapore. Responding to questions about defence cooperation in Southeast Asia, he revealed that the agreement with Vietnam has already been signed, although a formal public announcement may still be pending.

According to reports, the Vietnam deal is valued at around Rs 6,000 crore and includes training support as well as logistical assistance. The agreement marks another significant milestone for India’s growing defence manufacturing and export ambitions.

Rajesh Kumar Singh also indicated that Indonesia is close to finalizing a similar arrangement. He said negotiations with both countries had reached advanced stages, with Vietnam already completing the process and Indonesia moving toward the final phase.

Developed jointly by India and Russia, the BrahMos missile is regarded as one of the world’s fastest operational supersonic cruise missiles. Its name combines the Brahmaputra River in India and the Moskva River in Russia, reflecting the partnership behind its development. The missile can travel at speeds several times faster than the speed of sound, making it a key asset in modern defence operations.

India previously supplied BrahMos missiles to the Philippines, making it the first foreign customer for the system. The first batch was delivered in 2024, followed by a second shipment in April 2025. The successful execution of that contract has strengthened confidence in India’s defence export capabilities.

Emphasizing India’s approach to defence cooperation, Singh stated that advanced military technologies are shared only with trusted and friendly nations. He noted that India considers ASEAN countries important strategic partners and remains committed to supporting regional security and stability.

The Defence Secretary also highlighted India’s focus on building reliable supply chains, enhancing maritime security cooperation, and promoting innovation partnerships with countries across the Indo Pacific region. He stressed that strategic resilience has become increasingly important in the current global environment.

The development comes shortly after Defence Minister Rajnath Singh held discussions with Vietnamese Defence Minister Phan Van Giang in Hanoi on expanding bilateral defence cooperation. India has also been intensifying engagement with partners including Australia, the European Union, and the Netherlands, signaling a broader push to strengthen defence diplomacy across key regions.
