Grok responded to an Irish resident asking about Indian citizenship, explaining residency requirements and dual citizenship rules, while Elon Musk’s brief reaction sparked widespread discussion online.
A question about Indian citizenship has turned into an unexpected social media talking point after an Irish resident living in Kolkata sought advice from Grok.
The man said he lives in the city with his partner and their two children. He is considering staying in India permanently and wanted to know how long it would take to become eligible for Indian citizenship.
Grok responded with details about the residence requirements for naturalisation. It said an applicant generally needs to have lived legally in India for a substantial period before applying. Its answer referred to residence for 11 years during the previous 14 years, along with continuous residence in India during the year immediately before the application.
The chatbot also highlighted the issue of dual citizenship. India does not allow dual citizenship, so an Irish citizen who becomes an Indian citizen would have to give up Irish citizenship under the applicable rules.
Grok added that satisfying the basic conditions does not by itself mean that citizenship will be approved. The application still has to go through the official process, with the final decision resting with the Indian government.
The exchange gained much more attention after an X user, Peter Saint Onge, shared a video of the conversation. The post attracted reactions from users, eventually drawing a short response from Elon Musk.
Musk wrote, “India is realistic.”
