Taking a screenshot has become almost automatic whenever something useful appears on a phone screen. Whether it is a study point, an address, a recipe or an interesting image, many people simply save it with the thought that they can return to it later.
But researchers are now looking more closely at what happens to memory when information is captured digitally instead of being actively processed. Research from Binghamton University suggests that taking photos or screenshots can sometimes reduce later recall of the information compared with simply paying attention to it.
That does not mean taking a screenshot permanently harms memory. The findings are about how people remember information under particular experimental conditions, not evidence that screenshots cause lasting damage to the brain.

Researchers use the term Photo Taking Impairment Effect to describe a situation in which people may remember something less effectively after photographing or digitally capturing it.
Earlier research examined whether taking photographs could affect memory. More recent work has considered whether a similar pattern can occur when people use smartphones to capture information through screenshots.
In experiments, participants were shown different forms of visual information. Some were asked to observe the material, while others were instructed to capture selected images digitally. Their memory was then tested.

Why Does The Brain Do This

More Screenshots Do Not Automatically Mean Worse Memory

The real issue appears to be what happens after the information is saved.

Should You Stop Taking Screenshots
There is no need to completely stop using the screenshot feature. It can be genuinely useful for keeping information that may be needed later.
The more useful habit is to follow a screenshot with active engagement. If the information matters, read it again, think about the main point and try to recall it without looking at the screen.
Writing important information in your own words can also make it easier to understand and remember. Organising useful screenshots into appropriate folders or notes can make them easier to revisit instead of leaving everything mixed together in the phone gallery.
Phones Can Store More Than We Remember
