The airport is now in its final stages before becoming operational, with officials waiting for the aerodrome licence from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. Once the licence is issued, the airport will be able to move ahead with its commercial launch.Speaking to the media after the Union Budget, Adityanath said he believed the airport would be inaugurated by the Prime Minister this month. The development is being closely watched as the facility is expected to ease pressure on Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport.
Noida International Airport will become the second international airport serving the National Capital Region and the fifth international airport in Uttar Pradesh. The state already has international airports in Lucknow, Varanasi, Kushinagar and Ayodhya.The remaining regulatory process has largely focused on the aerodrome licence. Civil aviation officials are also working with the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security and airport management to address pending requirements ahead of the opening.
The Jewar airport is being developed under a public private partnership model across around 1,300 hectares in Gautam Budh Nagar. Zurich Airport International AG won the project, while its Indian subsidiary Yamuna International Airport is responsible for developing the facility under a 40 year concession.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the airport in November 2021. The first phase includes a runway and passenger terminal, with the project having experienced several delays from its original opening schedule.
The airport has already completed an important stage of testing. In October 2025, a calibration flight was carried out, followed by the landing of an Air India aircraft on October 31 as part of tests for navigation and communication systems.
These tests are designed to ensure that the airport’s infrastructure and systems meet required aviation safety standards before commercial operations begin.
The first phase is planned to handle around 12 million passengers annually. Once operational, the new airport is expected to strengthen connectivity in the NCR and provide another major gateway for passengers travelling to and from the region.
