PM KUSUM Scheme Helps Farmers Install Solar Pumps at Lower Cost With Government Subsidy
The PM KUSUM scheme offers substantial government subsidies and affordable financing to help farmers install solar powered irrigation pumps reducing electricity dependence and lowering long term farming expenses across India.

The Central Government is continuing its efforts to promote clean energy in agriculture by encouraging farmers to adopt solar powered irrigation systems through the PM KUSUM scheme. The initiative has been designed to reduce dependence on conventional electricity while ensuring reliable water supply for irrigation, particularly in regions where power outages frequently affect farming activities.
For many farmers, timely irrigation is essential for maintaining crop productivity. However, irregular electricity supply often creates challenges during critical farming periods. Solar powered pumps offer an alternative by providing uninterrupted access to water without relying entirely on the power grid. The government believes this shift can improve agricultural efficiency while also reducing recurring energy costs.
One of the biggest attractions of the PM KUSUM scheme is the financial assistance available for installing solar pumps. Under the program, the Central and State Governments jointly provide subsidies that generally cover up to 60 percent of the installation cost. Farmers can also access bank loans covering up to 30 percent of the project value at relatively low interest rates. As a result, beneficiaries typically need to contribute only around 10 percent of the total cost from their own funds.
Some states have introduced additional support beyond the standard subsidy. Small and marginal farmers in selected regions may receive financial assistance of up to 90 percent under specific state level provisions. These enhanced benefits are intended to make solar irrigation more affordable for farmers with limited financial resources.
Several states, including Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan, have implemented special incentive programs to encourage wider adoption of solar pumps. Meanwhile, farmers in northeastern states and hilly regions are eligible for higher levels of central assistance due to geographical and infrastructure related challenges.
The final cost of a solar pump depends on its capacity. A three horsepower solar pump typically costs between Rs 1.5 lakh and Rs 1.8 lakh in the market. After government subsidies are applied, farmers may be able to purchase the system for approximately Rs 40000 to Rs 45000. A five horsepower pump, which may cost more than Rs 3 lakh initially, can be obtained for around Rs 60000 to Rs 65000 after subsidy benefits.
For larger agricultural holdings requiring more powerful irrigation systems, solar pumps ranging from 7.5 horsepower to 10 horsepower are also available under the scheme. Depending on the model and subsidy received, the farmer’s contribution may range between approximately Rs 85000 and Rs 1.15 lakh.
The application process varies from one state to another because implementation is handled through state level agencies. Farmers interested in applying can check the official guidelines applicable to their state through the designated government portal or seek assistance from their nearest agriculture department office to understand eligibility requirements and documentation.
The government says the PM KUSUM scheme aims to achieve multiple objectives through a single initiative. Besides reducing farmers’ dependence on conventional electricity, the program supports the wider adoption of renewable energy, lowers long term cultivation costs, and helps improve farm productivity with a dependable irrigation system. As more farmers adopt solar powered pumps, the scheme is expected to contribute to sustainable agriculture while reducing the financial burden associated with irrigation.
