India Launches First Hydrogen Train With World’s Most Powerful Engine
India is set to launch its first hydrogen train between Jind and Sonipat, marking a major milestone with the world's most powerful and longest hydrogen powered passenger train service.
India Enters the Hydrogen Rail Era
India is set to achieve a major milestone in green transportation with the launch of its first hydrogen powered train. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will officially flag off the service on July 17 at 7.40 am. The train will operate on the 89 kilometre route between Jind and Sonipat in Haryana, marking India’s entry into the select group of nations using hydrogen powered rail technology.
The inaugural service will depart from Jind Railway Station at 7.40 am and is scheduled to reach Sonipat at 9.40 am. The introduction of this train reflects India’s growing focus on sustainable and environmentally friendly public transport solutions.
World’s Most Powerful Hydrogen Train
The newly introduced hydrogen train stands out with several global records. It is powered by a 3200 horsepower engine, making it the world’s most powerful hydrogen train. The train consists of 10 coaches, making it the longest hydrogen powered train currently in operation.
Designed to carry around 2600 passengers, it also ranks among the highest capacity hydrogen trains in the world. Unlike conventional diesel powered trains, this service produces no harmful emissions and releases only water vapour, making it a clean transportation alternative.
Advanced Technology Behind the Train
The train is capable of reaching a maximum speed of 75 kilometres per hour. It generates energy through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen using advanced fuel cell technology. The train is equipped with a 1200 kVA propulsion system to ensure efficient performance and reliable operations.
The hydrogen train has been designed and developed at the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, highlighting India’s growing capabilities in railway innovation and green mobility.
India Joins a Select Global Club
Germany introduced the world’s first commercial hydrogen train service in 2018. Only a handful of countries, including the United Kingdom, have adopted hydrogen powered trains since then. With this launch, India joins the growing list of nations investing in cleaner railway technology and sustainable transport for the future.
