DRDO Successfully Tests Quantum Key Distribution System to Strengthen India’s Future Defence Communications
DRDO has successfully completed military trials of an indigenous Quantum Key Distribution system, strengthening secure defence communication networks and preparing India against future cyber threats powered by advanced quantum computing technologies.

DRDO Achieves Major Milestone in Secure Military Communications
India has taken a significant step toward strengthening its future defence communication infrastructure. The Defence Research and Development Organisation has successfully completed military field trials of its indigenous fiber based Quantum Key Distribution system. Developed in partnership with Bengaluru based Taqbit Labs, the technology is designed to protect highly sensitive communication networks from next generation cyber threats.
The successful testing marks an important achievement in India’s efforts to build secure strategic communication systems capable of withstanding future attacks, including those powered by quantum computers.
Joint Development with Taqbit Labs
The advanced system was created by DRDO scientists in collaboration with Taqbit Labs, the organisation’s industry partner. Building on earlier laboratory experiments and successful prototype testing, the technology has now been transformed into a deployable product for real world defence applications.
Officials said the system has been designed entirely within India, supporting the country’s goal of developing advanced indigenous security technologies.
What Is Quantum Key Distribution
Quantum Key Distribution, commonly known as QKD, is an advanced encryption technology based on the principles of quantum physics. It enables two parties to exchange highly secure digital encryption keys for confidential communication.
Unlike conventional encryption methods, any attempt to intercept or monitor the communication immediately changes the quantum properties of the transmitted particles. This instantly alerts users to the presence of an intrusion, making unauthorized access extremely difficult.
Preparing for the Quantum Computing Era
Experts believe that powerful quantum computers could eventually crack many of today’s strongest encryption systems within seconds. As countries prepare for this technological shift, secure communication technologies such as QKD are becoming increasingly important for national security.
The successful field trials emonstrate India’s readiness to safeguard strategic defence communication networks against future cyber risks posed by quantum computing.
Foundation for Advanced Quantum Networks
DRDO stated that the newly developed technology lays the groundwork for building large scale multi hop quantum networks across the country. These advanced networks can extend secure quantum communication over longer distances by using technologies such as quantum teleportation and entanglement swapping, enabling safer transmission of quantum information.
The achievement represents another milestone in India’s growing capabilities in advanced defence technology while reinforcing long term cybersecurity for critical national infrastructure.
