Smart Cards to Replace Aadhaar for Telangana Free Bus Travel

The Telangana government is planning a new facility for Mahalakshmi Scheme beneficiaries, introducing special smart cards that will allow women to access free bus travel more conveniently.

The Telangana government is taking steps to make the Mahalakshmi Scheme more user-friendly by introducing special smart cards for women availing free bus travel services. The move is expected to eliminate the need for passengers to show their Aadhaar cards during every journey.

The proposed smart cards will be equipped with digital chip technology and will serve as an identification tool for beneficiaries. RTC conductors will be able to issue free travel tickets by verifying these cards, making the process quicker and more efficient.

According to reports, the distribution of smart cards could begin as early as June. Officials have already identified eligible beneficiaries and are speeding up the card production process to ensure smooth implementation.

The initiative is likely to be launched initially on a pilot basis in selected areas. After evaluating its performance and resolving any technical issues, the government plans to expand the system across the state.

Since the launch of the Mahalakshmi Scheme, the number of women traveling on RTC buses has increased significantly. Transport officials say the scheme has not only benefited women commuters but has also boosted overall bus occupancy levels.

The primary objective of introducing smart cards is to simplify the free travel process and improve service delivery. Once implemented, women will be able to enjoy a faster and more seamless travel experience across Telangana.
