Mahesh Dixit Named IB Chief: Mahesh Dixit Appointed as New Intelligence Bureau Director

Mahesh Dixit Named IB Chief: Senior IPS officer Mahesh Dixit has been appointed as the new Director of the Intelligence Bureau, India’s premier internal intelligence agency. A 1993 batch officer of the erstwhile Telangana cadre, he brings decades of experience in intelligence operations and internal security to the country’s top intelligence position.

Throughout his career, Dixit has served in several key roles within the Intelligence Bureau, including Joint Director, Additional Director and Special Director. His long association with the agency and extensive operational background played a significant role in his appointment to the top post.

One of the most important phases of his career came while serving as the head of the Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau in Srinagar. During this period, he supervised intelligence and security operations across Jammu, Kashmir and Leh, especially after the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. Officials credit him with contributing to counterterrorism efforts, preventing cross border infiltration and strengthening internal security mechanisms.

Government sources also highlight his experience in monitoring extremist networks across Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. His expertise in intelligence gathering and coordination has made him one of the most experienced officers in the country’s internal security framework.

Dixit was promoted as Additional Director in 2022 and elevated as Special Director in September 2024. As the new Intelligence Bureau Director, he will oversee nationwide counterterrorism operations, counterintelligence activities, internal security management and intelligence coordination among states, while guiding the agency through emerging national security challenges.
