Hyderabad may soon witness a major upgrade in public transportation as the Telangana government explores the introduction of a Bus Rapid Transit System designed to provide faster and more efficient city bus services. The proposed model aims to offer a metro like travel experience while significantly reducing traffic congestion across the city.

Officials from the Roads and Buildings Department and GHMC have begun examining key road networks to assess the feasibility of dedicated corridors for TGSRTC buses. The study focuses on identifying routes where buses can operate without interference from private vehicles, helping commuters reach destinations on time even during peak traffic hours.

Under the proposed system, buses would run on exclusive lanes reserved only for public transport. Passengers would be able to purchase tickets before boarding, similar to metro stations, reducing delays at bus stops. The plan also includes smart traffic signals that prioritize buses at major junctions, allowing smoother and uninterrupted movement.

Another important feature of the system is accessibility. Bus platforms and vehicle floors would be aligned at the same height, making boarding easier for senior citizens, pregnant women and persons with disabilities. Transport experts believe this could improve passenger convenience and encourage more people to choose public transport.

The Bus Rapid Transit System has already delivered positive results in several cities around the world. Successful examples include Curitiba in Brazil, Bogota in Colombia and Jakarta in Indonesia. In India, cities such as Ahmedabad and Pune have implemented similar models and witnessed improvements in urban mobility.

Compared to metro rail projects, BRTS requires a much lower investment while still delivering high capacity transport services. Experts say the initiative could help reduce fuel consumption, ease road congestion and lower pollution levels by encouraging residents to shift from private vehicles to public transport.

If implemented successfully, Hyderabad’s city buses could become a faster, more dependable and commuter friendly transport option, offering a practical solution to the growing traffic challenges faced by the city.
