Family Holds Grand Funeral for Pet Dog, Leaves Entire Village Emotional
A farmer’s family in Telangana bid a tearful farewell to their pet dog Kalabhairava, honoring him like a family member with a funeral procession and traditional last rites.

In an emotional incident from Nalgonda district, a family’s deep bond with their pet dog has touched the hearts of many. The family conducted traditional funeral rites for their beloved dog, Kalabhairava, after he died in a road accident.
The incident took place in Bongoni Cheruvu village of Chityal mandal. Farmer Samidi Mahender Reddy and his family had raised Kalabhairava with immense affection, treating him as one of their own. Over the years, the dog became an inseparable part of the household and shared a strong connection with every family member.
Mahender Reddy, who lives with his parents, was especially attached to Kalabhairava. The pet accompanied him regularly to agricultural fields and remained by his side through daily activities. The family considered him more than just a pet and viewed him as a loyal companion.
A few years ago, Kalabhairava accidentally fell into a farm well while being chased by other dogs. Distressed by the incident, Mahender Reddy arranged a rescue operation with the help of local residents and a crane to save him. Since then, the emotional bond between the family and the dog grew even stronger.
Recently, tragedy struck when Kalabhairava was hit by a tractor and died. The loss left the family devastated. Unable to see him as merely an animal, they decided to bid him farewell with the same respect usually reserved for a family member.
The dog’s body was decorated with flower garlands and taken through the village in a special funeral procession. Relatives, villagers, and well-wishers joined the family to pay their final respects. Traditional funeral ceremonies were performed, and the family even completed the customary three-day rituals.
Speaking emotionally, Mahender Reddy said Kalabhairava was not just a pet but an integral part of the family who shared both happy and difficult moments with them. He added that coping with the loss has been extremely painful.
The touching incident has moved many people in the village and stands as a powerful example of the unconditional bond that can exist between humans and animals.
