P Narayana Kurup Passes Away: The Malayalam literary community is mourning the death of noted poet, literary critic and Padma Shri awardee P Narayana Kurup, who passed away at the age of 92. He breathed his last at his residence in Perurkada, Thiruvananthapuram, following age related health complications. His demise has drawn heartfelt tributes from writers, artists and public figures across Kerala.

Over a literary journey that spanned more than four decades, Kurup established himself as one of the most respected voices in Malayalam literature. His writings reflected a deep understanding of both traditional and modern literary movements, helping shape discussions around poetry, criticism and cultural expression.

Born on September 5, 1934, in Haripad in the former Travancore region, Kurup built a distinguished reputation not only as a poet but also as an influential literary critic. His contributions extended beyond literature, as he actively supported and evaluated classical art forms such as Kathakali and Koodiyattam, earning admiration from the cultural community.

Kurup also served in leadership roles for several respected literary and cultural organizations, including Tapasya and Margi. Through these positions, he played an important role in promoting artistic excellence and preserving Kerala’s rich cultural heritage.

His outstanding contributions were recognized with several prestigious honors over the years. He received the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award in 1991 and the Vallathol Award in 2014. In 2022, the Government of India conferred upon him the Padma Shri, the country’s fourth highest civilian award, acknowledging his immense service to literature and culture.

Following the announcement of his death, condolences poured in from across literary, cultural and political circles. His funeral was conducted with official honors in the presence of family members at the Thycaud Shanthikavadam crematorium in Thiruvananthapuram, marking the end of an era in Malayalam literature.
