Indian Railways Warns Passengers About Fines for Littering and Spitting
Railway officials are intensifying cleanliness checks as passengers caught littering or spitting inside trains and stations may face fines under applicable railway rules and regulations.
Indian Railways has stepped up efforts to keep trains and railway stations clean, hygienic and comfortable for passengers. As part of this initiative, the Secunderabad Division of South Central Railway conducted a 20 day special anti littering drive from July 17 to August 5, 2026.
During the campaign, railway officials registered 606 cases involving passengers found littering or spitting at stations and inside trains. Action was taken against the offenders under the applicable provisions of railway rules, with fines imposed for violations.
The inspection drive was jointly carried out by ticket checking staff and officials from the Commercial Department. Major stations covered during the campaign included Secunderabad, Hyderabad, Begumpet, Lingampalli, Charlapalli, Kazipet, Warangal and Khammam.
Passengers Asked to Use Dustbins
South Central Railway has urged passengers to take responsibility for maintaining cleanliness during their journey. Dustbins are available at railway stations and inside trains, and passengers have been advised to use them instead of throwing waste in public areas.
South Central Railway General Manager Sanjay Kumar Srivastava appreciated the efforts of the Secunderabad Division Commercial Department in conducting the special anti littering campaign. He also encouraged passengers to adopt better cleanliness habits and behave responsibly while travelling.
Railway authorities have made it clear that littering or spitting in prohibited areas can result in penalties. Passengers are also reminded that signs and announcements at stations and inside trains provide instructions on proper waste disposal.
Fine of Rs 500 for Littering or Spitting
According to the information provided by the railway authorities, passengers caught throwing waste or spitting can be fined Rs 500 on the spot. If the fine is not paid, further legal action and registration of a case may be possible under the applicable rules.
Railway officials are also carrying out checks for other prohibited activities. Passengers can face significant penalties for violations such as smoking and consuming alcohol on trains. In certain cases, fines may go up to Rs 5,000.
Railway authorities have therefore advised passengers to follow the rules and avoid actions that create inconvenience for others. Keeping trains and stations clean is not only a railway responsibility but also requires cooperation from every passenger.
Indian Railways is continuing such enforcement drives to improve cleanliness and make the travelling experience more pleasant for everyone.
