India Records Strong Growth in Coal Production and Transportation During July
India recorded higher coal production and transportation in July, highlighting stronger supply efficiency, improved logistics, increased domestic availability, and continued efforts to support power generation and economic growth nationwide.

India’s coal sector continued its steady growth in July 2026, with significant increases in both production and transportation. The latest figures underline the sector’s vital contribution to ensuring uninterrupted power supply while supporting the country’s expanding economy.
Coal production reached 69.75 million tonnes in July 2026, marking a 7.51 percent increase compared with 64.88 million tonnes produced during the same month in 2025. At the same time, coal transportation showed even stronger momentum, rising 17.34 percent to 86.33 million tonnes, up from 73.57 million tonnes a year earlier. The improved movement of coal reflects stronger logistics and better supply chain management across the country.
During the 2026 27 financial year up to July, cumulative coal production touched 302.24 million tonnes, while total coal transportation reached 354.70 million tonnes. Compared with the corresponding period of the previous financial year, overall coal movement registered a 5.87 percent increase, demonstrating sustained operational stability.
Coal India Limited remained the key contributor to the sector’s performance. The company produced 50.35 million tonnes of coal in July, recording 8.42 percent year on year growth. It also transported 63.67 million tonnes during the month, registering a 17.43 percent increase over July 2025. Its cumulative coal transportation during the current financial year up to July also grew by 6.81 percent compared with the same period last year.
According to the Coal Ministry, the steady rise in production and transportation highlights the government’s continued focus on maintaining reliable coal supplies across the country. The ministry said improving domestic coal availability, reducing dependence on imports, and ensuring sustainable growth remain its top priorities.
Officials believe the coal sector will continue to play a central role in meeting India’s rising energy demand while supporting industrial development and long term economic growth.
