India to Launch First Bullet Train in 2027 as Hyderabad Set for New High Speed Rail Corridors

India is preparing to enter the high speed rail era with the country’s first bullet train scheduled to begin phased operations from August 15, 2027. The initial service will operate on the Surat to Bilimora section of the Mumbai Ahmedabad High Speed Rail corridor, marking a major milestone in the nation’s railway network.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the 508 kilometre Mumbai Ahmedabad bullet train project will be opened in phases instead of waiting for the entire corridor to be completed. After the first stretch becomes operational, additional sections connecting Vapi, Surat, Ahmedabad, Thane, and Mumbai will be introduced gradually.

According to the Railway Minister, nearly 80 percent of the project has already been completed, with construction progressing at a steady pace. Once fully operational, the high speed rail corridor is expected to reduce travel time significantly, introduce advanced rail technology, and improve connectivity between two of India’s busiest economic centres.

Alongside the progress of the Mumbai Ahmedabad project, the Centre has also announced plans to expand the country’s bullet train network. Hyderabad has been identified as a key hub under the long term vision for high speed rail development.

The proposed corridors include Hyderabad to Chennai, Hyderabad to Bengaluru, and Pune to Hyderabad. A separate high speed rail link between Hyderabad and Mumbai has also been proposed. These projects are expected to strengthen regional connectivity, improve passenger travel, and support economic development across southern India.

Ashwini Vaishnaw said the proposed bullet train network would transform connectivity for Hyderabad and benefit several districts across Telangana. He also highlighted the government’s ongoing railway modernisation programme, under which 261 stations across the country are being upgraded. In Telangana, redevelopment work is currently underway at major stations including Secunderabad, Begumpet, and HITEC City.
