Growing jasmine in a pot is a popular choice for homes where there is not enough garden space. With the right care, even a relatively small plant can produce a healthy flush of fragrant flowers. The key is not simply adding more fertilizer, but maintaining a good balance of sunlight, water, pruning and soil quality.

Sunlight should be one of the first things to check. Jasmine generally performs well when it receives around six to eight hours of sunlight a day. A plant kept in heavy shade may produce fewer flowers and weaker growth. A sunny balcony, terrace or suitable outdoor spot can therefore make a noticeable difference.

Watering also needs some attention. The soil should not remain constantly soaked. Allow the surface to dry slightly before watering again, while making sure the plant does not remain severely dry for long periods. Excess water can encourage leafy growth and may also create problems for the roots.

Pruning is another important part of jasmine care. Removing weak, dry or unwanted branches allows the plant to direct its energy toward healthier new growth. Old leaves near the lower portion of the plant, faded flowers and dried sections can also be removed when necessary.

Gardeners should keep an eye on weeds growing in the pot as well. Unwanted plants compete with jasmine for water and nutrients. Removing them regularly helps the main plant make better use of the available resources.

The ingredients can be mixed in small quantities and applied sparingly around the edge of the pot instead of placing them directly against the stem.

For a small container, a small quantity of the mixture may be enough, while a larger pot can require somewhat more. After applying any homemade fertilizer, cover it lightly with soil and water the plant appropriately. Overfeeding can do more harm than good, so regular small applications are preferable to adding large quantities at once.

The timing of maintenance can also matter during hot weather. If repotting is necessary, doing the work during the cooler part of the day can reduce stress on the plant. After repotting, keeping the jasmine in partial shade for a short period can help it adjust before returning it to stronger sunlight.

There is no single fertilizer that guarantees flowers throughout the year. Flowering depends on the jasmine variety, growing conditions, season, plant age and overall health. A healthy plant with sufficient light, suitable soil and sensible watering is more likely to flower well.

For those growing jasmine in containers, consistency is often more useful than complicated gardening routines. Remove dead growth, provide adequate sunlight, avoid waterlogging and feed the plant carefully.
