Price, however, needs a closer look when comparing EVs. Some manufacturers offer Battery as a Service, commonly known as BaaS, which separates part of the battery cost from the vehicle price. This can make the starting price look lower, but customers may then have to pay an additional battery usage or subscription charge.

The Tata Tiago EV remains one of the more accessible electric cars in the market. Tata’s current website lists the Tiago EV from 6.99 lakh rupees ex showroom, while battery options include 19.2kWh and 24kWh versions. The larger battery is rated for up to 315km of MIDC range under the applicable testing cycle.

Its compact dimensions make it particularly suitable for crowded cities. Buyers who mainly travel to work, run errands and make short daily trips may find the Tiago EV easier to live with than a larger electric vehicle.

MG Comet EV
The MG Comet EV takes a completely different route. It is a tiny electric car designed primarily around urban mobility, with its compact size making parking and navigating narrow city roads considerably easier.

The Tata Punch EV is the more SUV like option for buyers shopping around this budget. Tata’s earlier Punch EV started at 9.99 lakh rupees, although the company has since introduced a newer version with pricing starting at 9.69 lakh rupees in Mumbai.

The current Punch EV range has also moved beyond the older 25kWh configuration. Tata now offers 30kWh and 40kWh battery options, with the larger battery rated for up to 468km of ARAI certified range.

That combination of SUV styling, a practical cabin and a larger battery option makes the Punch EV worth considering for buyers who want something more versatile than a small city car.

MG Windsor EV
The MG Windsor sits in a different price category when bought with its battery included. However, MG has used the BaaS model to reduce the initial purchase price, making the Windsor relevant for buyers who are specifically looking for a lower upfront cost.

The standard Windsor was launched with a 38kWh battery and a claimed 332km ARAI range. MG has also expanded the Windsor family with larger battery versions and BaaS plans.

The Windsor stands out for its spacious cabin and more premium positioning. It makes more sense for buyers who want a larger family vehicle and are comfortable understanding the additional battery usage charges associated with a BaaS plan.

Which EV Makes Sense
There is no single best electric car for every buyer under 10 lakh rupees. The Tiago EV is a sensible choice for affordability and everyday commuting, while the Comet EV makes more sense for buyers who mainly drive within busy cities.

The Punch EV is better suited to customers who prefer SUV styling and need more flexibility, while the Windsor becomes interesting if a BaaS plan fits the buyer’s driving pattern and budget.

Before booking any EV, buyers should check the latest ex showroom price in their city, charging availability at home and work, battery warranty and the total cost under a BaaS plan. The lowest starting price may not always mean the lowest ownership cost.
