According to officials, the aircraft was participating in testing linked to the Air Force’s radar modernization program. The mission was focused on evaluating the performance of a newly installed Active Electronically Scanned Array radar system when the crash took place.

The bomber reportedly went down just minutes after taking off at around 11:20 a.m. local time on Monday. The aircraft crashed near the runway and quickly caught fire, sending thick black smoke across parts of the Mojave Desert. Emergency crews rushed to the scene and launched rescue efforts, but no survivors were found.

Colonel James Hayes, Deputy Commander of the 412th Test Wing, confirmed the fatalities and described the victims as eight outstanding Americans. Authorities said those killed included military personnel as well as government and private contractors involved in the mission. Family members of the victims have been informed.

Officials have ordered a high level investigation to determine the cause of the crash. Preliminary assessments are underway, while a final report may take up to six months to complete. Investigators are expected to examine technical, operational and environmental factors linked to the accident.
