Satya Nadella Predicts AI Agents Will Replace Traditional Apps

Microsoft believes AI agents will become the primary interface between people and devices, reducing reliance on apps and operating systems while enabling smarter and more adaptive digital experiences.

The era of opening multiple apps for different tasks may gradually come to an end, according to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. Speaking at the Microsoft Build 2026 conference, Nadella said that AI agents are expected to become the main bridge between humans and computers, transforming how people interact with technology in the years ahead.

Microsoft has introduced a new platform called Project Solara in partnership with Qualcomm to support this vision. The platform combines hardware, software, and cloud technologies into a unified ecosystem, aiming to simplify digital experiences and unlock a new phase of computing innovation.

Rather than relying on separate applications for every task, users may soon interact directly with AI agents through voice or text commands. These intelligent agents will be capable of coordinating across different software programs and devices, completing tasks on behalf of users without requiring them to switch between multiple apps.

A key feature of the new platform is a technology known as Just In Time UI. This system allows interfaces to adjust automatically based on the device being used. Whether a user is interacting through a smartphone, computer, voice command, or touch controls, the AI agent can generate and modify the interface in real time.

Microsoft believes this approach will significantly reduce the effort required by developers to create separate designs for different devices. It could also lower development costs and accelerate the creation of new gadgets and digital services.

According to Nadella, AI agents will play a much larger role in the future, gradually taking over many functions currently handled by apps and operating systems. As AI technology continues to evolve, these agents could become the central layer connecting users with the digital world.
