Customer Complaint Over Excess Fuel Billing Sparks Probe in Kanpur

Officials launched an inquiry after a motorist claimed a fuel station billed him for petrol exceeding his car's tank capacity, raising concerns about possible fuel dispensing manipulation.

Questions have been raised over fuel dispensing practices at a petrol station in Kanpur after a customer reported a major discrepancy between his vehicle’s fuel tank capacity and the quantity mentioned on his bill.

The complainant, Charan Singh, had taken his recently purchased car to a fuel station and requested a full tank. Before refuelling, the vehicle’s indicator reportedly showed that several litres of fuel were already available inside the tank.

Despite the vehicle having a certified tank capacity of 45 litres, Singh was allegedly handed a bill indicating that more than 52 litres of petrol had been supplied. The unexpected reading immediately caught his attention.

According to Singh, the actual quantity filled appeared to be significantly lower than the amount reflected on the final bill. He alleged that changes were made to the meter reading during the transaction, resulting in an additional quantity being recorded.

Determined to verify the facts, he invited a representative from the car manufacturing company to inspect the situation. The company official reportedly confirmed that the vehicle’s fuel tank could not store fuel beyond its designated capacity.

Armed with this confirmation, Singh approached government authorities and lodged a complaint against the fuel station. The allegations have since prompted a broader inspection of fuel dispensing machines and electronic systems at the outlet.

Officials are now examining whether any technical tampering or unauthorized devices were involved. The outcome of the investigation is expected to determine whether regulatory or legal action will follow.
