Five New Supreme Court Judges Appointed as Centre Clears Collegium Recommendations

The Central Government has approved the appointment of five new Supreme Court judges, including four High Court Chief Justices and a senior woman advocate, strengthening the country's highest court.

The Supreme Court of India is set to gain additional strength after the Central Government approved the appointment of five new judges following recommendations made by the Supreme Court Collegium headed by the Chief Justice of India. The move is expected to help address judicial vacancies and improve the pace of case disposal in the country’s highest court.

Among the newly appointed judges are four serving Chief Justices of different High Courts. Justice Shree Chandrashekhar, currently serving as Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, has been elevated to the Supreme Court. Justice Sheel Nagu, who heads the Punjab and Haryana High Court, has also been appointed to the apex court.

Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, the current Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, and Justice Arun Palli, Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court, are also part of the new appointments approved by the Centre.

A notable feature of the latest appointments is the elevation of senior advocate V Mohana to the Supreme Court bench. She is the only person in the current list to be directly appointed from the Bar, making her selection particularly significant. Her appointment also increases the representation of women judges in the Supreme Court.

V Mohana began her legal journey after graduating from law college in Coimbatore and went on to build a distinguished career in the legal profession. Over the years, she worked alongside some of India’s most prominent legal minds and handled several important cases before the Supreme Court and Delhi High Court.

Her contributions to the legal field were recognized when she was designated as a Senior Advocate by the Supreme Court in 2015. Legal circles view her elevation as an important milestone, reflecting growing recognition of accomplished advocates from the Bar.

With these appointments, the Supreme Court’s judicial strength will increase further, helping the institution manage its heavy workload more effectively. The newly appointed judges are expected to take oath soon and begin their responsibilities at the apex court.
