Father Dies After Watermelon Consumption as Son Battles Severe Food Poisoning
A suspected food poisoning incident linked to watermelon consumption in Madhya Pradesh left one man dead and his son critically ill, raising fresh concerns over chemically treated summer fruits.

A tragic food poisoning case reported from Madhya Pradesh’s Sheopur district has sparked concern over the safety of fruits sold during the summer season. A father lost his life while his son remains in critical condition after both reportedly consumed watermelon purchased from a local market.
According to local reports, the family had brought home a watermelon to beat the intense summer heat. The father and son ate the fruit together, but within a few hours both began experiencing severe health complications including stomach pain, vomiting and diarrhoea.
As their condition rapidly worsened, family members rushed them to a nearby district hospital for emergency treatment. Doctors tried to stabilise both patients, but the father reportedly died during treatment. The son is currently undergoing intensive care and remains in critical condition.
Medical experts suspect the incident could be linked to severe food poisoning caused either by bacterial contamination or chemically treated fruit. Doctors warned that some fruits sold during summer are injected with harmful substances to improve colour and speed up ripening, which can pose serious health risks.
Health specialists said cut fruits kept in open conditions for long periods can also attract dangerous bacteria, especially during extreme temperatures. Consuming such contaminated fruits may lead to serious infections and life threatening complications.
The incident has once again highlighted the importance of food safety during summer months. Experts advised people to avoid buying pre cut watermelon pieces from roadside vendors or shops where fruits remain exposed for hours.
Doctors also recommend washing the outer surface of watermelons thoroughly before cutting them. Consumers are advised to stay cautious if the fruit appears unusually bright red inside while the seeds remain pale or white, as this may indicate possible chemical treatment.
Health officials further advised people to consume cut watermelon immediately and avoid storing it for long periods, even inside refrigerators. Anyone experiencing discomfort after eating fruits should seek medical attention without delay.
