WhatsApp Tests After Reading Feature That Could Redefine Message Privacy and Auto Deletion

WhatsApp is once again working on improving user privacy with a new feature that could significantly change how disappearing messages function. The platform, known for constantly upgrading its messaging experience, is now testing a system called After Reading that focuses on deleting messages based on when they are actually read rather than when they are sent.

The idea behind this update is simple but powerful. Instead of messages disappearing after a fixed duration from sending, they will now stay in the chat until the receiver opens them. Once the message is read, a countdown begins, and the message automatically deletes after the selected time limit. This approach gives users more precise control over sensitive conversations.

According to early beta reports shared by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is allowing users to choose different deletion timers after a message has been read. Options may include short and extended durations such as five minutes, one hour, or twelve hours. Once a recipient opens the message, the selected timer activates immediately and the message is removed when time runs out.

Interestingly, the feature also adds an extra layer of protection for unread messages. If a message is not opened within 24 hours, it will automatically disappear to ensure privacy is maintained even if the recipient never views it. This makes the system more secure for users sharing confidential or time sensitive information.

The feature is currently being tested with selected beta users on both Android and iOS platforms. WhatsApp is expected to expand the rollout gradually after evaluating feedback and performance during the testing phase.

One of the most notable changes with After Reading is the shift in control from sender based timing to reader based timing. This ensures that messages are not wasted in chat history and reduces the chances of old sensitive information being accessed later.

For many users, this update could be particularly useful in conversations involving personal details, financial information or private discussions that are not meant to stay in chat history permanently. The feature is also expected to reduce digital clutter while improving message security at the same time.
