Kacheguda Station Redevelopment: Kacheguda Railway Station Set for Rs 474 Crore Redevelopment with Heritage Building Preserved

Kacheguda Station Redevelopment: Hyderabad’s Kacheguda Railway Station may soon undergo a major transformation, with the South Central Railway working on a redevelopment proposal estimated at Rs 474.29 crore.

What makes the project notable is the decision to retain the station’s old heritage structure. The historic building on the western side would be preserved, while a new terminal is planned towards Amberpet on the eastern side.

The proposed changes are aimed at giving passengers more space and easier access without losing the character of the century old station. A spacious air concourse is planned above the platforms, measuring about 72 metres wide and 115 metres long.

Several passenger facilities have been proposed within this area, including food courts, executive lounges, retail shops, exhibition spaces and children’s play areas. These additions are intended to make the station more comfortable for people waiting for trains.

Movement inside and around the station is also expected to change. The concept plan proposes separate pathways for arriving and departing passengers, along with additional foot over bridges wherever required.

A skywalk connecting the railway station with the nearby bus station has also been included in the proposal. This could make transfers between rail and road transport easier, particularly for passengers using public transport.

Parking is another part of the proposed redevelopment. Multi level parking facilities have been suggested on both sides of the station to handle vehicles and reduce congestion around the premises.

Kacheguda is not just another railway station in Hyderabad. The building, constructed in 1916 during the Nizam era, is recognised for its distinctive Indo Islamic architectural design. It has remained an important part of the city’s railway history for more than a century.

The station was originally developed under the Nizam State Railways and later became an important transport point as Hyderabad expanded. Its passenger traffic and role have grown along with the city.

The redevelopment concept attempts to address that changing demand without removing the historic identity of the station. Instead of replacing the old structure, the proposed design places new infrastructure around it.

However, the plan is still at the draft concept stage. The final design may be modified before the project receives the necessary approvals and moves towards implementation.
