India Japan T20I: India Add Japan as Their 20th T20I Opponent in Historic Sano Match

India Japan T20I: India are set to take on Japan in a one off T20 International at the Sano International Cricket Ground in Tochigi on September 22. The match will be the first international meeting between the men’s teams and comes as part of the Suzuki Cup.

The fixture has attracted attention beyond the usual cricketing circle because it gives India a new opponent at the international T20 level. Japan becomes the 20th different team to face India in men’s T20I cricket, according to the opponent list provided for the match.

India’s T20I journey began in 2006, and over the years the team has played against both established cricket nations and Associate sides. Australia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies, New Zealand and England have been among India’s most frequent opponents, while teams such as Namibia, Netherlands, UAE, Nepal and Oman have also featured in the schedule.

Japan now joins that list with a match that carries its own significance. The game is being held during celebrations marking 75 years of diplomatic relations between India and Japan. The BCCI and Japan Cricket Association have linked the fixture to the Sport 75 initiative, which aims to encourage greater sporting cooperation and people to people exchanges between the two countries.

For Japan, the occasion is particularly important. The country is preparing for its men’s cricket campaign at the 2026 Asian Games, and facing the reigning T20 World Cup champions provides a rare opportunity to play against one of the leading teams in international cricket. Japan are also using the fixture as preparation for their Asian Games campaign.

India, meanwhile, are using the match as preparation for their own Asian Games campaign. The Indian side will enter the Asian Games as defending champions after winning the men’s cricket gold medal at the 2023 Hangzhou Games. The tournament in Aichi Nagoya will begin later in September.

Shreyas Iyer has been named India’s captain for the Japan match. The squad also includes experienced names such as Jasprit Bumrah and Washington Sundar, along with younger players including Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma and Vipraj Nigam. Japan will be led by Kendel Kadowaki Fleming, who is among the experienced players in the Japanese squad.

The Sano International Cricket Ground, located in Tochigi Prefecture, will host the historic contest. The match is scheduled to begin at 9:30 am Indian Standard Time on September 22.

The meeting also represents another step in Japan’s efforts to expand cricket’s reach. Baseball remains deeply established in the country, but the Japan Cricket Association has been working to build the sport through domestic competitions, international events and greater exposure to top cricket nations. The arrival of India for a T20I is one of the biggest occasions yet for Japanese cricket.

For India, the match adds another name to an already extensive list of T20I opponents. For Japan, it is a chance to play on home soil against the current world champions in a fixture that combines cricket, Asian Games preparation and the 75th anniversary celebrations between the two countries.
