Russia Ukraine War: Massive Drone Attack Targets Moscow

The Russia Ukraine War has entered another tense phase after Russia reported a massive Ukrainian drone assault on Moscow and surrounding areas. Russian authorities said more than 1,600 drones were intercepted across several defensive lines since Saturday, including around 450 that were heading toward Moscow.

The attack caused damage at the Moscow Oil Refinery, while a residential building was also hit. Fires were reported at several locations, and emergency teams were deployed to deal with the damage. Russian officials initially reported two deaths in the Moscow region, with the reported toll later rising to three.

The scale of the attack made it one of the largest drone assaults reported against Moscow since the war began. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said Russian air defence systems had intercepted hundreds of drones approaching the capital. He also alleged that the operation was intended to disrupt Russia’s parliamentary elections, a claim that Ukraine did not immediately endorse or comment on.

The Moscow Oil Refinery was among the most significant sites affected. Several drones reportedly reached the refinery grounds, where a fire broke out. The facility is an important source of fuel for Moscow and the surrounding region and has previously been targeted during the conflict.

Residential areas were also affected. A drone strike on a high rise building led to a major fire and the evacuation of hundreds of residents, according to regional authorities. Damage was reported to apartments, private homes and vehicles in parts of the Moscow region.

At the same time, Russian forces continued their attacks on Ukraine. Ukrainian officials reported that overnight Russian drone strikes in the Kyiv region killed four people, including three children. Ukrainian authorities also reported deaths and injuries in other areas, underlining the continuing impact of long range attacks on civilian communities.

Russia’s Defence Ministry separately said its air defence systems had destroyed or intercepted 1,110 Ukrainian drones overnight across Russian regions, occupied Crimea and the Black Sea. The figures reported by Russian authorities refer to drones intercepted or destroyed and do not necessarily represent the total number launched.

The latest attacks come as both countries continue using long range drones and missiles against energy, logistics and other infrastructure. The escalation has raised fresh concerns about civilian safety and damage to critical facilities as the war continues.
