20 20 20 Rule for Better Eye Health During Screen Use
Long hours on smartphones, laptops and other screens can cause eye strain and dryness, while regular breaks, balanced nutrition, adequate sleep and routine eye checks support healthy vision.

Smartphones, laptops, tablets and televisions have become part of everyday life, making prolonged screen exposure difficult to avoid. For people who spend several hours studying, working or browsing on digital devices, complaints such as tired eyes, dryness, burning and temporary blurred vision can become noticeable.
One simple habit that may help is the 20 20 20 rule. After every 20 minutes of screen use, look at something around 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. The short break gives the eyes a chance to relax after continuous near focusing.
Blinking is another small habit that often gets overlooked. People tend to blink less when concentrating on a screen, which can contribute to dryness and irritation. Making a conscious effort to blink regularly can help maintain moisture on the surface of the eyes.
The way a screen is used also matters. Sitting in a completely dark room with a bright phone or laptop screen can make viewing uncomfortable. Keeping some suitable ambient lighting in the room and adjusting screen brightness according to the surroundings may make screen use more comfortable.
However, watching a screen in the dark should not automatically be considered a cause of permanent eye damage. The bigger concern is the contrast between a very bright display and a poorly lit environment, which can increase discomfort and eye strain for some people.
Food also has a role in maintaining general eye health. Vitamin A is an important nutrient for normal vision, while the body can convert beta carotene from certain foods into vitamin A. Carrots and sweet potatoes are well known sources of beta carotene, while leafy vegetables and a variety of fruits and vegetables provide other useful nutrients.
A balanced diet is more helpful than focusing on one particular food. Including different vegetables, fruits, whole grains, protein sources and other nutrient rich foods can provide a broader range of vitamins and minerals needed by the body.
At the same time, diet should not be presented as a quick solution for refractive errors. Conditions such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism may require properly prescribed glasses or contact lenses. Eating carrots or other nutritious foods cannot be expected to remove an existing glasses prescription within a few days.
Claims that food or simple eye exercises can rapidly reduce glasses power, particularly claims promising major changes within two days, should therefore be treated with caution. Good nutrition supports eye health, but it is not a substitute for appropriate eye care.
Adequate sleep is another part of the routine. When screen use continues late into the night, sleep can be affected, especially if the device is used immediately before bedtime. Giving the body enough time to rest can make a difference to overall wellbeing and may also help reduce the tired feeling that often accompanies long days of screen use.
For temporary mild discomfort, placing a clean, cool, damp cloth over closed eyes for a few minutes may feel soothing. This is only a comfort measure and does not correct myopia or reduce glasses power.
People should pay attention if eye discomfort continues despite taking breaks. Severe pain, significant redness, signs of infection or sudden changes in vision need proper medical assessment rather than home remedies.
Regular eye examinations are also important, particularly when someone notices persistent difficulty seeing clearly, frequent headaches while reading or changes in vision. An eye care professional can identify whether the problem is related to refractive error, dryness or another condition.
The 20 20 20 rule is not a complicated treatment. It is simply an easy reminder to interrupt long periods of continuous screen viewing. Combined with regular blinking, comfortable lighting, sufficient sleep, nutritious food and appropriate eye examinations, it can become a useful part of a healthier daily routine.
The goal is not to stop using digital devices completely. Instead, small changes in how screens are used can make long study or work sessions more comfortable while supporting better everyday eye care.
