N Rangasamy Set for Fifth Term as Puducherry CM After NDA Victory
Veteran leader N Rangasamy is poised to return as Puducherry Chief Minister for a fifth term as AINRC led NDA secures clear majority, reshaping political landscape after decisive April elections.

Puducherry is set for another term under veteran leader N Rangasamy, as the AINRC led NDA secured a comfortable majority in the recent Assembly elections. The results have reaffirmed public trust in Rangasamy, known for his quiet leadership style and steady political presence.
The alliance crossed the majority mark in the 30 member House with 18 seats, ensuring a stable government. The All India NR Congress played a key role in the victory by winning the bulk of the seats it contested, while the Bharatiya Janata Party added crucial support with its wins. Other allies also contributed to the coalition’s tally, strengthening the NDA’s hold in the Union Territory.
This will mark Rangasamy’s fifth stint as Chief Minister, a rare achievement in Puducherry politics. His journey includes earlier terms with the Congress in 2001 and 2006 before he broke away to form his own party in 2008. Over the years, he has maintained a strong voter base, which was once again reflected in the election outcome.
The opposition bloc, including the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and Congress, struggled to make an impact. Several prominent leaders faced defeat, signaling a shift in voter preference. The loss of senior figures has raised questions about the opposition’s strategy and future direction in the region.
The upcoming government is expected to function as a coalition ministry, similar to the previous administration. Allies are likely to seek representation in the cabinet, which traditionally consists of a limited number of ministers. Additionally, nominated members will be included, although their legislative powers remain restricted in certain areas.
Another notable aspect of the results is the absence of women representatives in the new Assembly, as none of the female candidates managed to secure a win. The House will instead feature a blend of experienced politicians and first time legislators, reflecting both continuity and change in Puducherry’s political landscape.
With a decisive mandate, Rangasamy now faces the task of steering the Union Territory through its next phase of governance, backed by a coalition that appears firmly in control.
