Aadhaar Name Change Made Easier With Documents Based On Your Situation

UIDAI has outlined different documents for Aadhaar name changes after marriage, divorce, legal correction, complete name changes, transgender updates and corrections involving children under specified rules and procedures for applicants.

Changing a name on an Aadhaar card can become necessary for several reasons. A person may want to update their name after marriage, correct a legal change, restore a complete name or make an update following a divorce.

The Unique Identification Authority of India has specified different documents for different situations. This means applicants need to choose documents according to the reason for requesting the name change rather than submitting the same proof for every case.

For many people, the most common situation is a name change after marriage. In such cases, a marriage certificate issued by the central or state government can be used as an accepted document. The certificate may contain a photograph or may be issued without one.

If the marriage certificate does not carry a photograph, the applicant may also need to provide an identity document containing the old name and photograph. This additional document helps establish the connection between the previous identity and the updated name.

Divorce is another situation where Aadhaar details may need to be changed. A divorce decree issued by a Family Court can be used as supporting proof for the name update.

Similar to the marriage case, a divorce order without a photograph may require an additional identity document carrying the applicants previous name and photograph. Applicants should therefore keep the relevant supporting documents ready before starting the update process.

The requirements are different when a person wants to change their first name or complete name. In such cases, a Gazette notification is the accepted document for establishing the name change.

However, the Gazette notification has a limited purpose. It can be used as proof of identity for the name change, but it cannot be used as proof of address, relationship or date of birth.

This distinction is important because applicants may need separate documents if they are updating other Aadhaar details along with their name. A document accepted for one purpose does not automatically become valid proof for every other Aadhaar field.

There are also specific provisions for transgender persons. A transgender identity card or certificate issued under the Transgender Persons Protection of Rights Act, 2019 can be used for relevant Aadhaar updates.

The document can support changes relating to gender and complete name changes. It can also serve as proof of identity, address and date of birth as permitted under the applicable requirements.

The rules are also different for children. Aadhaar records for children between birth and 18 years can sometimes contain a temporary name format such as Baby of followed by the parents details.

When parents or guardians want to replace this temporary name with the childs full name for the first time, a birth certificate issued under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969 is required.

For children whose names are already recorded, certain smaller corrections are also permitted through the Head of Family process. These can include adding, removing or changing a surname, correcting spelling or expanding a shortened name.

However, these corrections are expected to relate to the same underlying name rather than introducing an entirely different name without the required supporting proof.

A birth certificate or a document establishing that the applicant is the childs legal guardian may be required for such changes. Parents and guardians should therefore check which category their request falls under before submitting an update.

The document requirement becomes especially important because Aadhaar name changes are not handled identically in every circumstance. A certificate suitable for a marriage related change may not be sufficient for a complete name change or a childs first name update.

Applicants should also make sure that the information across their supporting documents is consistent. Differences in spelling, names or other personal details can lead to additional verification requirements.

For someone planning an Aadhaar name update, the safest approach is to first identify the reason for the change and then arrange the document specifically accepted for that situation.

Marriage, divorce, complete legal name changes, transgender related updates and changes involving children each have their own requirements. Understanding this distinction can help applicants avoid unnecessary delays and repeated visits during the update process.

The updated document based approach is particularly useful because name changes are often connected to important life events. Keeping the correct certificate or legal document ready can make the Aadhaar update process more straightforward.
