Homemade Floor Cleaner Can Make White Tiles Shine, But Use It Carefully

A simple homemade floor cleaning mixture using common household ingredients may help tackle dirt, stains and unpleasant smells on tile floors.

White tiles and marble flooring can give a home a bright and spacious appearance, but they also tend to show dust, footprints and stains quickly. During the rainy season, moisture can make floors feel sticky and unpleasant, making regular cleaning even more important.

Instead of relying entirely on expensive commercial cleaners, some homeowners prefer preparing simple cleaning mixtures at home. A mixture containing baking soda, salt, lemon juice and vinegar is one such option. However, it should be used carefully because acidic ingredients can affect certain flooring materials and finishes.

What You Need
For a small batch, you can use two to three camphor tablets, two tablespoons of baking soda, three tablespoons of white salt, two to three tablespoons of white vinegar and the juice of two large lemons. Five to six drops of an essential oil can be added for fragrance if desired.

About one to one and a half glasses of water can be used to dilute the mixture.

How To Prepare It
Start by taking water in a large bowl. Add the crushed camphor, salt and baking soda, then stir well.

Next, add the lemon juice and vinegar gradually. The mixture may fizz when the acidic ingredients come into contact with baking soda, so it is better to add them slowly rather than all at once.

Once the mixture settles, transfer it into a suitable bottle and add essential oil if you want a pleasant fragrance. Shake gently before use.

How To Use The Cleaner
For routine floor cleaning, a small quantity of the mixture can be diluted in a bucket of water before mopping. It is better to begin with a modest amount rather than making the cleaning solution highly concentrated.

For a stubborn surface mark, a little diluted solution can be applied to the affected area and wiped after a short period. Always test the mixture on a small hidden section first, especially when cleaning marble, natural stone or specially finished flooring.

Why These Ingredients Are Used
Vinegar and lemon juice are acidic and can help loosen certain mineral deposits and surface grime. Baking soda is commonly used for its ability to absorb unpleasant odours and provide mild cleaning action.

Salt can add mild abrasive action, while camphor and essential oils are mainly used for their fragrance. They should not be treated as reliable insect or disinfectant replacements.

There is also an important precaution. Vinegar and lemon should not be used routinely on marble, limestone or other acid sensitive natural stone because acids can damage the surface. Strong mixtures should also never be combined with bleach or other cleaning chemicals.

For ordinary ceramic or suitable tile surfaces, a properly diluted homemade cleaner may be a convenient option for regular household cleaning. The best results still depend on frequent mopping, removing spills quickly and choosing a cleaning method suitable for the particular flooring.
