According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the earthquake occurred at 4.29 pm and originated beneath the sea at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers. The shallow depth of the quake made it widely noticeable across nearby regions.

The epicenter was located in the western part of Kumamoto Prefecture, nearly 900 kilometers southwest of Tokyo. Residents in several surrounding areas experienced strong shaking, although emergency officials said there were no immediate signs of large scale destruction.

Japan is among the world’s most earthquake prone countries because of its location along the Pacific Ring of Fire, where multiple tectonic plates meet.
