Government Extends Deadline for Meta Over WhatsApp Username Feature
The Central Government has given Meta an additional three days to submit its response regarding concerns surrounding WhatsApp’s upcoming Username feature. The extension comes after the technology company requested more time to address questions raised by officials about the impact of the new functionality.
Meta has also assured the government that the feature will not be introduced in India until all pending discussions and regulatory concerns are resolved.
India Puts WhatsApp Username Rollout on Hold
The proposed Username feature is designed to allow WhatsApp users to communicate without sharing their personal phone numbers. Instead of relying on mobile numbers, users would be able to connect through unique usernames, offering an additional layer of privacy.
While the feature is currently under development, its rollout in India has been temporarily paused following concerns expressed by the government over possible misuse.
Why the Government Is Concerned
According to government officials, the Username system could create new challenges in tackling cybercrime if not supported by strong verification mechanisms. Authorities believe the feature may make it easier for fraudsters to create fake identities or accounts that closely resemble those of well known individuals and organizations.
Such impersonation could potentially lead to identity theft, financial fraud, phishing scams and other forms of cybercrime, making it harder for users to distinguish genuine accounts from fraudulent ones.
Meta Assures Cooperation
Following a notice issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, representatives from Meta met government officials to discuss the proposed feature. During the meeting, the company reportedly assured authorities that the Username functionality would not be introduced in India until all concerns had been thoroughly examined.
Meta has also requested additional time to provide a detailed explanation on how the feature will safeguard users while maintaining privacy.
Privacy Benefits Balanced Against Security Risks
The new Username system is intended to improve user privacy by reducing the need to share personal phone numbers during conversations. This could be particularly useful for users communicating with businesses, communities or people they do not know personally.
However, regulators are evaluating whether the added privacy could also create opportunities for misuse if bad actors exploit usernames to impersonate public figures, brands or trusted contacts.
Discussions Continue Before Any Launch
The government has indicated that consultations will continue until all security, identity verification and user protection concerns are adequately addressed. Only after these issues are resolved will a decision be made on allowing the feature to launch in India.
For now, WhatsApp users in the country will have to wait, as Meta has confirmed that the Username feature will remain unavailable until it receives the necessary regulatory clearance.
The ongoing discussions highlight the growing focus on balancing digital privacy with online safety. While the Username feature promises greater privacy for users, authorities want to ensure that stronger protections are in place to prevent impersonation, cyber fraud and identity related crimes before the feature becomes available in one of WhatsApp’s largest markets.
