UPI Set for Major AI Upgrade With Voice Payments and Smarter Fraud Protection
NPCI plans to introduce AI powered voice payments stronger fraud detection multilingual support and smarter credit services aiming to make UPI faster safer and easier for millions of users across India

India’s digital payment ecosystem is preparing for another major transformation as the National Payments Corporation of India plans to introduce advanced Artificial Intelligence features into the next phase of UPI. The upcoming improvements are expected to make digital transactions more convenient, secure, and accessible while helping millions of new users adopt the platform with ease.
One of the biggest highlights of the proposed upgrade is the introduction of AI powered voice based payments. Instead of relying only on manual inputs, users may soon be able to complete transactions using simple voice commands. Combined with multilingual support, the feature is expected to make UPI easier to use for people who are more comfortable speaking their native language rather than navigating English based interfaces.
NPCI Chief Executive Officer Dilip Asbe recently explained that Artificial Intelligence will play a central role in the future growth of UPI. According to him, AI can simplify the onboarding process for first time users and remove many of the barriers that currently prevent people from adopting digital payments. The goal is to make the payment experience more natural, especially for those who are less familiar with smartphones or financial technology.
The organization had already introduced a voice assistant based interactive system in 2023. While the technology showed promise, its adoption has not grown as expected. NPCI now believes that integrating modern AI capabilities can significantly improve the system, making voice interactions faster, smarter, and more reliable for everyday use.
Security is another area where AI is expected to make a significant impact. Online payment fraud continues to evolve, and NPCI wants Artificial Intelligence to identify suspicious transactions before they cause financial damage. AI based systems could automatically detect unusual payment patterns, identify fraudulent accounts, and monitor mule accounts more efficiently, strengthening the safety of the UPI network.
Beyond payments, NPCI also sees Artificial Intelligence supporting future financial services. The organization is exploring the possibility of AI helping financial institutions assess user and merchant profiles for credit related services. This could eventually simplify processes such as loan eligibility assessments and faster credit approvals. However, NPCI has not announced a timeline for rolling out these features.
The scale of UPI continues to expand rapidly across the country. According to NPCI, the platform currently processes more than 750 million transactions every day. The long term objective is to increase that figure beyond one billion daily transactions as digital payments continue to become part of everyday life for consumers and businesses alike.
The UPI ecosystem remains dominated by PhonePe and Google Pay, which together account for more than 80 percent of the market. Meanwhile, NPCI’s own BHIM UPI application holds a relatively small share of around one percent. With AI driven innovations on the horizon, NPCI hopes to improve the overall experience across the entire UPI network while making digital payments more inclusive, secure, and intelligent for every user.
