Hyderabad Engineer Rises to CTO Compute Role at OpenAI
From a Hyderabad engineering college to one of the worlds leading AI companies Uday Rudraraju journey highlights how skill dedication and continuous learning can open doors to global technology leadership.

A Hyderabad born engineer has earned global recognition after taking on one of the most important technology leadership roles at OpenAI. Uday Rudraraju has been promoted to CTO Compute marking another milestone for Indian professionals making a strong impact in the artificial intelligence industry.
What makes his achievement especially inspiring is that he did not graduate from an IIT IIIT or NIT. Instead he completed his Computer Science Engineering degree at Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology in Hyderabad before building a successful international career through expertise determination and consistent learning.
Rudraraju recently announced his promotion through LinkedIn. He revealed that after leading OpenAI compute and infrastructure teams over the past year he has now assumed the role of CTO Compute. He said the company is focused on building some of the worlds largest AI computing infrastructure to support future generations of advanced AI models. He also invited talented engineers to join the mission of shaping the next phase of artificial intelligence.
His journey to the top was built over several years. After graduating from CBIT he moved to the United States and completed a Masters degree in Computer Science at the University of Minnesota. During his student years he gained practical experience as a Software Engineering Intern at Amazon laying the foundation for his future career.
In 2013 he joined eBay as a Software Engineer where he spent more than five years working on large scale cloud infrastructure. His technical expertise and leadership helped him grow into a senior technical leader contributing to the development of critical cloud systems for one of the worlds biggest ecommerce platforms.
Rudraraju later joined Robinhood in 2018 where he advanced from Staff Software Engineer to Senior Director of Engineering and Head of Infrastructure. During a period of rapid expansion he led major projects involving large scale computing infrastructure performance optimization and platform scalability.
His experience expanded further in 2024 when he became Head of Infrastructure Engineering at xAI the artificial intelligence company founded by Elon Musk. There he supervised the development of massive GPU clusters high speed networking systems advanced data storage solutions and distributed computing platforms that support cutting edge AI research.
This extensive experience in building high performance computing infrastructure eventually brought him to OpenAI in 2025. He initially joined as the leader of the companys compute and infrastructure division before earning a promotion to CTO Compute within a year. In his new role he oversees the computing systems required to train advanced AI models including future generations of large language models.
Uday Rudraraju story also carries a powerful message for aspiring engineers. His success demonstrates that professional excellence is not defined by the name of a college alone. Strong technical skills continuous learning and perseverance can create opportunities at the highest levels of the global technology industry making his journey an inspiration for young engineers across India.
