India electric passenger vehicle market recorded strong growth in June with Tata Motors leading sales while rising consumer interest and expanding charging infrastructure continued to drive adoption nationwide.

India’s electric passenger vehicle market recorded impressive growth in June, with sales more than doubling compared to the same period last year. Industry data indicates that increasing consumer interest, improving charging infrastructure and rising fuel costs have continued to accelerate the shift towards electric mobility.
According to figures released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations, electric passenger vehicle sales reached 31823 units during the month. This represents a year on year increase of nearly 108 percent. The segment also expanded its share of the overall passenger vehicle market, rising to around 7.7 percent from approximately 4.6 percent a year earlier.
Tata Motors continued to dominate the electric passenger vehicle segment by recording sales of 12187 units in June. The company achieved a year on year growth of more than 126 percent, maintaining its position as the country’s leading electric car manufacturer.
The company recently revealed that one out of every three new vehicle bookings received during June was for an electric model. Tata Motors also reported strong performance during the first quarter of the current financial year, with electric vehicle sales increasing by around 112 percent to reach 34467 units.
The recent launch of the Tata Sierra EV is expected to further strengthen the company’s position. The electric sport utility vehicle features design updates compared to its internal combustion engine counterpart. Bookings for the Sierra EV have already begun, with customer deliveries scheduled to start from July 15. The model is priced between Rs 18.79 lakh and Rs 24.79 lakh before taxes.
Mahindra and Mahindra secured the second position in the electric passenger vehicle market by selling 7766 units during June, marking a year on year increase of 121 percent. The company’s growing electric portfolio includes models such as the BE 6, XEV 9e, XEV 9S and XUV 3XO EV, helping it expand its presence in the rapidly growing segment.
MG Motor ranked third after recording sales of 5861 electric passenger vehicles during the month. The company has continued to strengthen its position through an expanding range of electric models aimed at different customer groups.
Maruti Suzuki secured the fourth position in the electric passenger vehicle market following the introduction of its new e Vitara. The electric sport utility vehicle has been developed on the company’s Heartect e platform and marks an important step in Maruti Suzuki’s expansion into the electric mobility segment.
Industry experts believe the continued rise in fuel prices, growing awareness about sustainable transportation and better charging infrastructure are encouraging more buyers to consider electric vehicles. As leading manufacturers continue to introduce new models across different price segments, competition in India’s electric passenger vehicle market is expected to become even stronger in the coming months.
