ChatGPT Teen Safety: ChatGPT Introduces Stronger Safety Protections for Teens
OpenAI is strengthening ChatGPT protections for teenage users, adding tighter safeguards, parental controls and healthier usage features while keeping the platform useful for learning and creativity.

ChatGPT Teen Safety: OpenAI is expanding safety measures for teenagers using ChatGPT, with the company applying a separate teen experience designed for users under 18. The changes are aimed at making the chatbot more suitable for younger users without removing its usefulness for study, creativity and everyday questions.
Under the updated system, ChatGPT can use age prediction signals to determine whether an account may belong to someone under 18. When an account is placed in the teen experience, additional safeguards are applied automatically. Users aged 13 to 17 can continue using ChatGPT, while younger children are not intended to use the service.
The biggest changes concern sensitive subjects. Teen accounts receive stronger restrictions around graphic violence, self harm, risky viral challenges, sexual or romantic roleplay and content linked to unhealthy body image or dieting. OpenAI says the aim is to reduce exposure to material that may be inappropriate for younger users.
Parents also get more control when their account is linked with a teenager’s account. Available options include setting Quiet Hours, managing certain features and receiving notifications in limited high risk situations. Parents do not automatically receive access to their teenager’s conversations simply because the accounts are linked.
Another focus is how teenagers spend time on the platform. OpenAI says extended ChatGPT sessions can trigger break reminders, encouraging users to step away rather than continuing for long periods. Parents can also manage settings related to features such as voice mode and image generation.
Study Mode is another part of the approach. Parents can enable it through parental controls, allowing teenagers to use ChatGPT in a way that is more focused on learning and understanding rather than simply receiving answers to school questions.
OpenAI has also said that its teen safety work is being developed with input from outside experts. The company has been gradually expanding age prediction and related protections as it tries to distinguish adult and teenage experiences more accurately.
The system is not completely fixed, however. OpenAI acknowledges that age prediction can sometimes make mistakes. Adults who are incorrectly placed in the teen experience can verify their age to have the additional restrictions removed.
For families, the broader change means ChatGPT is moving toward a more age aware experience rather than treating every user in the same way. OpenAI says the goal is to allow teenagers to benefit from AI for education and creativity while adding safeguards suited to their age.
