BSNL has launched a satellite phone in India that enables voice communication beyond mobile network coverage, offering dependable connectivity for emergency services, remote workers, travellers, and disaster response operations.
BSNL Satellite Phone Launch: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited has introduced a new satellite phone in India to provide uninterrupted communication in places where regular mobile networks are unavailable. The device is aimed at users who frequently work or travel in isolated regions and need a dependable way to stay connected.
The satellite phone is priced at Rs 1,34,166 including taxes. It is specially designed for challenging environments such as mountain ranges, dense forests, offshore locations and disaster affected areas where mobile towers either do not exist or stop functioning.
Unlike conventional smartphones that rely on nearby cellular towers, a satellite phone connects directly to satellites orbiting the Earth. This allows users to make voice calls even in locations with no mobile signal, making it an essential communication tool for remote operations.
BSNL developed the device in collaboration with international satellite communication companies including Inmarsat. Whenever a call is made, the signal is transmitted to a satellite, which then forwards it to a ground station connected to the telecom network. This process enables communication even when traditional infrastructure is unavailable.
One of the biggest advantages of the satellite phone is its ability to continue operating during emergencies such as floods, earthquakes or cyclones when regular mobile networks may fail. It is built to ensure reliable communication in critical situations where every second matters.
The device includes satellite based voice calling, an SOS emergency feature, long battery backup for extended use and a rugged design capable of withstanding harsh outdoor conditions. These features make it suitable for demanding work environments.
BSNL says the satellite phone is not intended to replace everyday smartphones. Instead, it is designed for defence personnel, disaster response teams, maritime operators, industrial workers, scientists, adventure travellers and pilgrims who require reliable communication in remote and inaccessible regions.
