State owned telecom operator BSNL has officially introduced a new satellite phone designed to provide seamless communication in locations where conventional mobile networks are unavailable. Priced at Rs 1.34 lakh, the device connects directly to satellites instead of relying on cellular towers, making it suitable for remote forests, mountain ranges, offshore regions and disaster affected areas.
The service has been launched in partnership with global satellite communications provider Inmarsat, while operations in India will be managed through the country’s GSPS gateway, ensuring secure and reliable connectivity.
Built for Emergencies and Extreme Conditions
Unlike regular smartphones that depend on mobile towers, the BSNL satellite phone continues to function even when terrestrial communication infrastructure fails. During earthquakes, floods, cyclones or other natural disasters, when mobile towers are damaged, the satellite phone can remain operational and provide uninterrupted communication.
The device has been designed to withstand harsh weather conditions including freezing temperatures, desert heat and heavy rainfall. It also offers significantly longer battery life compared to standard smartphones, making it suitable for extended field operations.
Who Can Purchase the Satellite Phone
At present, the satellite phone is primarily intended for government departments, defense organizations, disaster management agencies, mining and oil exploration companies and maritime operators. These sectors often require communication services in regions where conventional telecom networks are unavailable.
Adventure travelers and individuals visiting remote locations may also be eligible to purchase the device, but only after obtaining the necessary government approvals.
Government Approval Is Mandatory
BSNL has clarified that the satellite phone cannot be purchased freely by the general public. Any individual or organization planning to own or use the device must first obtain prior approval from the Department of Telecommunications.
Using or possessing a satellite phone without the required authorization is prohibited under Indian law and may result in legal action. The approval process is intended to ensure national security and regulated usage of satellite communication services.
Postpaid Satellite Phone Plans
BSNL has introduced multiple postpaid plans for government and commercial customers.
The Government G1 plan is priced at Rs 3500 per month and includes 16 free calling minutes or SMS.
The Government G2 plan costs Rs 5835 per month with 30 free calling minutes or SMS.
The Commercial C1 plan is available at Rs 11670 per month and offers 60 free calling minutes or SMS.
Prepaid Plans for Different Users
Government users can opt for the monthly G1 prepaid plan at Rs 3500, which includes 20 free minutes or SMS.
The annual Government GA plan is priced at Rs 38500 and provides 240 free minutes or SMS for one year.
Commercial customers can choose the monthly C1 prepaid plan at Rs 5835 with 30 free minutes or SMS.
The annual Commercial CA plan costs Rs 64185 and includes 360 free minutes or SMS.
Charges After Free Usage
Once the complimentary calling minutes or SMS allocation is exhausted, additional usage will be billed separately.
Government users will be charged Rs 18 for every extra minute of calling or SMS, while commercial customers will pay Rs 25 per additional minute or SMS.
Recharge Options and Customer Support
Prepaid customers can continue using the satellite service by purchasing top up recharge vouchers. BSNL currently offers recharge denominations of Rs 200, Rs 500, Rs 1000, Rs 5000 and Rs 10000.
