According to health experts, cooked food can generally be stored safely in a refrigerator for about 24 to 48 hours, depending on the type of dish. Simple items like rice and lentils usually last longer compared to meat or seafood, which spoil more quickly and should be consumed sooner. Even cut fruits stored for long hours can pose health risks if not handled properly.

Many families routinely refrigerate extra rice after cooking, whether prepared in a pressure cooker or by draining starch. Medical specialists confirm that this practice is not harmful if done correctly. However, the key lies in proper cooling and timely refrigeration.

Ideally, cooked rice should be placed in the refrigerator within three to four hours of preparation. If rice is left outside for too long, especially in warm weather, it becomes more vulnerable to bacterial growth even if later refrigerated. In such cases, reheating may not fully make it safe for consumption.

Experts warn that improperly stored rice can sometimes develop bacteria such as Bacillus cereus. This organism can multiply quickly in warm, moist environments and may lead to food poisoning symptoms including stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal cramps.

Food safety specialists stress that proper storage methods are essential. Cooked rice should always be cooled completely before placing it in the refrigerator. Hot rice should never be stored directly, as trapped moisture encourages bacterial growth. Using airtight containers is recommended to maintain freshness and prevent contamination.

It is also advised to reheat refrigerated rice thoroughly before eating and avoid keeping it at room temperature for long after removal from the fridge. Following these simple precautions can significantly reduce the risk of food related illness while allowing safe consumption of leftovers.
