Chhattisgarh Wedding Feast Tragedy Leaves Boy Dead and Four Children Critical
A wedding celebration in Chhattisgarh’s Janjgir Champa district turned tragic after suspected food poisoning reportedly linked to watermelon consumption left one boy dead and four children hospitalized in serious condition.

A joyful wedding function in Chhattisgarh’s Janjgir Champa district ended in heartbreak after a young boy died and four other children were hospitalized following suspected food poisoning during the celebrations.
The incident took place on Tuesday afternoon in Gurkod village, where several family members had gathered to attend a relative’s wedding ceremony. According to local reports, the children had lunch at the event around noon and later ate slices of watermelon served at the venue.
Within a couple of hours, all five children reportedly developed severe vomiting and diarrhea. Their condition quickly worsened, and family members rushed them to a nearby hospital after they experienced breathing difficulties.
Doctors confirmed that a boy identified as Akhilesh Dhivar died while undergoing treatment. The remaining four children are currently receiving emergency medical care. Hospital authorities stated that their health condition has stabilized and they are gradually recovering.
Family members of the deceased suspect that the watermelon served during the wedding feast may have caused the illness. Following the incident, health department officials reached the village and collected samples of the food served at the function, including the watermelon pieces, for laboratory testing.
Authorities have conducted a postmortem examination on the deceased boy, and officials are waiting for the final medical report. Investigators are now examining whether contaminated food, spoiled watermelon, or the presence of harmful chemicals triggered the suspected food poisoning case.
