Ladakh Apricots Reach UAE in Landmark Export Boost

Ladakh’s premium organic apricots have entered the UAE market through a major export initiative, creating new opportunities for farmers while introducing the region’s world-famous mountain fruit to global consumers.

Ladakh Apricots Make Historic Entry Into UAE Market

Ladakh has taken a significant step in expanding its agricultural presence across international markets. The region’s premium organic apricots have been shipped to the United Arab Emirates, marking the beginning of a large-scale export initiative that promises better income opportunities for local fruit growers.

The first consignment of five metric tonnes of fresh apricots was officially flagged off from Ladakh Bhawan in New Delhi. The shipment will travel nearly 2,800 kilometres by air before reaching Dubai. Refrigerated containers and temperature-controlled transport have been arranged to ensure the fruit remains fresh throughout the journey.

Major Export Plan for This Season

The Ladakh administration has partnered with APEDA and global retail giant Lulu Group to expand exports during the current harvest season. Officials aim to export around 1,000 metric tonnes of premium apricots, a remarkable jump from just 1,500 kilograms exported over the past two years. The ambitious target reflects growing international demand for Ladakh’s high-quality produce.

The export programme is expected to strengthen the region’s horticulture sector while opening new overseas markets for local farmers.

Why Ladakh Apricots Are Special

Apricots grown in Ladakh thrive in the Himalayan region’s cold climate, clean air and chemical-free environment. These naturally cultivated fruits are valued for their sweetness, rich flavour and superior quality.

Popular local varieties such as Raktsey Karpo and Halman have earned a strong reputation among buyers for their taste and premium quality, making them ideal for international markets.

Health Benefits of Apricots

Apricots are packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds that may support heart health and help reduce harmful cholesterol levels. They also contain calcium and phosphorus, which contribute to stronger bones and improved bone density.

The fruit is a good source of vitamin C and other essential nutrients that help maintain healthy, glowing skin. In addition, its dietary fibre supports healthy digestion when consumed in balanced portions.

Eat in Moderation

Despite their nutritional value, excessive consumption of apricots may lead to digestive discomfort, including bloating, gas or diarrhoea due to their high fibre content.

Dried apricots contain concentrated natural sugars, so people with diabetes should consume them carefully to avoid sudden spikes in blood sugar levels. Some individuals may also experience allergic reactions, including skin rashes or breathing difficulties.

A New Chapter for Ladakh Farmers

This milestone export highlights Ladakh’s growing role in global horticulture. With rising international demand and improved export infrastructure, the region’s farmers are set to benefit from wider market access while introducing the unique taste of Himalayan organic apricots to consumers around the world.
