How to Remove Sweat and Musty Odour From Bedsheets Naturally
Bedsheets can hold sweat, body oils and detergent residue over time, leaving behind an unpleasant smell that regular washing may not always remove completely.

• White vinegar helps freshen bedsheets.
• Bedsheets should be dried soon after washing.
• Sweat odour can build up in fabric fibres.
A fresh bedsheet can make a noticeable difference at bedtime, but keeping it that way is not always easy. During hot and humid weather, sweat and body oils can settle deep into the fabric. Even after a normal wash, some bedsheets may continue to have a stale or sweaty smell.
One simple household option is distilled white vinegar. Used correctly during the rinse cycle, it can help loosen detergent residue and reduce unpleasant odours trapped in the fabric.
The reason vinegar is often used for laundry is its mild acidity. It can help break down some of the residue left behind by detergents, body oils and sweat. This may also leave the fabric feeling less stiff after washing.
For machine washing, start by washing the bedsheet normally with your regular detergent. During the final rinse, add around half a cup of distilled white vinegar to the fabric softener compartment. This allows it to mix with the water during the rinse rather than being added directly with the detergent.
If you wash bedsheets by hand, mix around half a cup of distilled white vinegar into a bucket of water after the regular washing process. Place the washed bedsheet in the solution for about 10 minutes, then rinse or wring it out before drying.
It is important to use distilled white vinegar rather than coloured vinegar or apple cider vinegar. Other types may contain colour or additional ingredients that could potentially leave marks on fabric.
There is also no need to add vinegar every time you wash your bedsheets. Using it once or twice a month, or when a noticeable odour develops, can be a more practical approach. Excessive use is best avoided, particularly if you are concerned about long term effects on fabrics or washing machine components.
Drying the bedsheet properly is just as important as washing it. Leaving damp laundry inside the washing machine for hours can encourage a musty smell to return.
Take the bedsheets out soon after the wash finishes and dry them thoroughly. Sun drying can also help leave the fabric feeling fresh, provided the material and care instructions allow it.
For stubborn odours that continue despite proper washing and drying, checking the washing machine itself may also be worthwhile. Residue and moisture inside the machine can sometimes contribute to unpleasant smells transferring back onto freshly washed laundry.
