Railways Introduce New Token System for Tatkal Ticket Booking at Reservation Counters

Passengers planning to book Tatkal railway tickets through reservation counters should be aware of a major procedural change introduced by Indian Railways. The new system is designed to reduce long queues and improve crowd management at railway reservation offices. The updated rules apply only to counter bookings, while online Tatkal reservations continue without any changes.

Under the revised process, passengers must first collect a token before they can book a Tatkal ticket. Instead of waiting in long lines for hours, travelers will now be called to the booking counter according to their token number. This move aims to make the booking experience more organized and convenient for everyone.

The timing for token distribution depends on the category of the Tatkal ticket. For AC Tatkal bookings, which open at 10 am, tokens will be issued between 8:30 am and 9:00 am. Travelers who wish to secure an AC Tatkal ticket should arrive at the station within this time to collect their token.

For Sleeper and other Non AC Tatkal tickets, booking begins at 11 am. Tokens for these categories will be distributed between 9:30 am and 10:00 am. Passengers are advised to reach the reservation counter early, as only those with valid tokens will be called for booking.

The Railway Ministry has also fixed the maximum number of tokens that can be issued at each booking counter. A single counter can issue up to 10 tokens for AC Tatkal bookings and up to 15 tokens for Sleeper and Non AC Tatkal bookings. This allows passengers to know in advance whether they have a realistic chance of getting a ticket before waiting for the booking process.

Officials believe the new token system will help manage the heavy rush that typically occurs when Tatkal bookings open each day. By regulating passenger flow and reducing overcrowding at reservation counters, the new arrangement is expected to provide a faster and more orderly booking experience.
