Patanjali Set to Enter Insurance Sector With Magma General Insurance Acquisition

Patanjali Ayurveda has received regulatory approval to acquire a majority stake in Magma General Insurance marking its entry into the insurance business and expanding its financial services presence.

Patanjali Ayurveda is preparing to expand beyond its core consumer products business by entering India’s insurance sector through the acquisition of a controlling stake in Magma General Insurance. The proposed transaction has reportedly received approval from the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India, clearing a major regulatory milestone for the deal.

The acquisition is expected to be carried out jointly by Patanjali Ayurveda and the DS Group, the company known for manufacturing Rajnigandha products. The transaction, valued at around Rs 4500 crore, was first announced by the two companies earlier this year as part of their strategy to diversify into financial services.

Following the completion of the deal, Patanjali is expected to hold a 73.6 percent stake in Magma General Insurance, while the DS Group will own approximately 24.5 percent. The shares are being acquired from existing investors, including Sanoti Properties, which currently holds the largest stake in the insurer.

Magma General Insurance has shown a significant improvement in its financial performance over the past few years. According to CareEdge Ratings, the company recorded a strong compound annual growth in gross direct premium between the financial years 2020 and 2025, outperforming the overall growth rate of the general insurance industry during the same period.

The insurer also returned to profitability in the financial year 2024 to 2025 after reporting losses in the previous year. During the first nine months of the current financial year, the company further strengthened its financial position by posting a higher net profit and maintaining a healthy solvency margin, reflecting improved operational stability.

Industry experts believe the acquisition will provide Patanjali with an opportunity to establish a presence in India’s growing insurance market while strengthening Magma General Insurance with the backing of new strategic investors. The move also marks a significant diversification for Patanjali as it broadens its business interests beyond Ayurveda and fast moving consumer goods.
