Telangana Egg Prices Rise: The steady rise in egg prices has become another concern for families across Telangana, with household food expenses increasing over the past few months. Retail prices have already climbed to around Rs 8 per egg in several markets, and traders believe the rate could soon touch Rs 10 if current supply conditions continue.
A combination of reduced production and rising input costs has driven the price increase. Poultry farms across the state suffered losses during the intense summer, with nearly ten percent of birds reportedly dying because of extreme heat. At the same time, higher feed and medicine expenses have added to the overall cost of production, limiting the availability of eggs in the market.
According to data released by the National Egg Coordination Committee, the wholesale egg price in Hyderabad increased to Rs 6.35 during June 20 to June 26, compared with Rs 5.55 at the beginning of the month. As wholesale prices moved higher, retailers started selling eggs between Rs 6.80 and Rs 8 depending on the locality.
Industry representatives say farmers are still facing financial challenges despite the recent increase in prices. They explain that producing one egg now costs nearly Rs 7, while many farmers receive only about Rs 6 at the farm gate. They also point out that the current price improvement is helping them recover some of the heavy losses experienced during the earlier West Asia crisis.
Retail sellers also say their profit margins remain limited. After purchasing eggs at around Rs 6.50 each and covering transportation and other operating expenses, they are selling them for nearly Rs 7 in several areas. Telangana produces nearly four crore eggs every day, with almost half of the total output consumed within the state itself.
The continued increase in prices is also placing additional pressure on suppliers involved in the government midday meal programme. Although the arrival of the monsoon is expected to improve poultry production, experts believe demand may also rise during the same period. As a result, egg prices are likely to remain firm or increase further in the coming weeks unless supply improves significantly.
