Telangana Launches Rural Internet Corporation for High Speed Village Connectivity

The Telangana government has created a new corporation to expand high speed internet services in villages with three lakh rural connections planned in the first phase.

Telangana has taken a major step toward strengthening digital infrastructure in rural areas with the formation of a dedicated corporation aimed at expanding high speed internet connectivity across villages. The initiative is expected to bridge the digital divide and bring reliable broadband access closer to millions of rural residents.

The state government has officially established the Telangana Rural Internet Infrastructure Corporation Limited to implement and manage internet expansion projects under the Amended BharatNet scheme. The new organization will function through a joint partnership between the Central and State governments in line with national telecommunications guidelines.

One of the most significant features of the project is the plan to provide three lakh internet connections in rural households during the first phase. The Central government has approved financial support of Rs 300 crore for this rollout, with each connection receiving dedicated funding to ensure rapid implementation in underserved areas.

The corporation has also received a major financial boost for long term operations. Following requests made by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and Information Technology Minister Duddilla Sridhar Babu, the Central government approved Rs 2,600 crore for operational expenses over the next ten years. The funding will support maintenance, power costs and other technical requirements essential for sustaining the network.

Unlike the existing T Fiber network, which primarily extends up to district and mandal headquarters, the newly formed corporation will focus on taking internet connectivity from mandal centers to the last mile in villages. The goal is to ensure that even remote habitations gain access to reliable digital services.

Officials say the project will not only strengthen internet access but also improve opportunities in education, healthcare, agriculture, governance and digital commerce. Rural residents are expected to benefit from faster online services, improved communication and access to digital resources that were previously difficult to reach.

The governing structure of the corporation has been designed to ensure equal participation from both governments. The board will include senior officials from information technology, finance, panchayat raj and energy departments along with representatives nominated by the Central government. The Managing Director of Telangana Fiber Grid Corporation will also serve as the Chief Executive Officer of the new corporation.

Another important objective of the initiative is the modernization of existing BharatNet Phase One and Phase Two infrastructure. Authorities plan to upgrade older networks while extending broadband services to villages that currently lack connectivity.

With large scale funding, institutional support and a clear focus on last mile connectivity, the Telangana government believes the project can accelerate digital inclusion and help transform rural communities into active participants in the digital economy.
