Chandrasekaran Gets Five More Years: N Chandrasekaran Gets Five More Years as Tata Sons Chairman
Tata Sons has approved N Chandrasekaran for another five year term, reversing his earlier decision to step down as chairman when his current tenure ends in February 2027.

Chandrasekaran Gets Five More Years: N Chandrasekaran will continue as executive chairman of Tata Sons for another five years after the company’s board approved his reappointment on Thursday. The decision comes just weeks after Chandrasekaran had indicated that he would not seek another term.
Chandrasekaran’s current tenure is scheduled to end on February 20, 2027. His decision last month had triggered discussions within the Tata group about finding a successor, but the latest board decision has now changed that course.
The development comes at a significant time for Tata Sons. The Reserve Bank of India recently rejected the company’s request to surrender its registration as a Core Investment Company, leaving the group facing the regulatory requirements linked to its status as an upper layer NBFC.
According to reports, the board’s decision also followed discussions over the company’s future leadership and listing-related matters. Reuters reported that the reasons behind Chandrasekaran’s change of position were not immediately clear. Tata Sons had not issued an official comment at the time of the report.
The board decision was not unanimous. Tata Trusts Chairman Noel Tata reportedly voted against Chandrasekaran’s reappointment, while the proposal secured sufficient support from the other board members. Moneycontrol reported that the board approved the five-year extension despite Noel Tata’s opposing vote.
Chandrasekaran first took charge as Tata Sons chairman in February 2017 and began his second five-year term in February 2022. His latest reappointment will extend his tenure into 2032.
The board has also been considering the future of Tata Sons in the context of the RBI’s regulatory position. Reports on Thursday said the company had approved steps related to a potential listing, although details of the process are still emerging.
