Hyderabad Bus Terminals Plan Aims to Ease City Traffic

Hyderabad could soon see a major change in the way long distance buses enter the city. The Telangana government is considering a plan to develop four modern bus terminals around the city, with the main aim of reducing traffic and vehicle pollution in busy areas.

Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar said the proposal is being examined keeping Hyderabad’s future transport needs in mind. The idea is to prevent long distance, inter district and interstate buses from travelling deep into the city when their passengers can instead transfer to local public transport.

The proposed terminals are being considered at Gajularamaram, Shamshabad, LB Nagar and Ghatkesar. These locations would cover different directions from which buses enter Hyderabad, including routes towards Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra as well as traffic coming through the Outer Ring Road.

Under the proposed arrangement, buses arriving from outside the city could stop at the terminal serving that particular direction. Passengers would then continue their journey using city buses, Metro services or MMTS trains, depending on their destination.

The government wants the connections between these services to be practical for passengers. Last mile transport is therefore expected to be an important part of the plan. City bus routes from the terminals could be arranged to connect passengers with major parts of Hyderabad without forcing them to depend on private vehicles.

Airport connectivity is also being considered as part of the wider transport arrangement. Depending on the route and passenger demand, buses heading towards the airport and services coming from other districts could be managed through the designated terminals.

The proposal is not limited to government buses. Private bus operators are also expected to come under the new system if the plan moves forward. The government has raised concerns about private buses being parked along roads and operating in large numbers during night hours, which can add to congestion and pollution.

A terminal based system for private operators is being examined. Operators could be required to use the designated facilities and pay user charges under the proposed rules. The government is working on the details of how such a system could function.

Land availability is another key part of the project. Officials are considering around 100 acres in the Gajularamaram area and about 150 acres near Shamshabad for terminal development. The final land arrangements and other details are yet to be decided.

The proposed facilities are expected to include passenger waiting areas, parking space and better connections with other modes of transport. The intention is to make the terminals more than simple bus stopping points and develop them as transport hubs for people entering and leaving Hyderabad.

The government is also looking at the arrival of 2,200 electric buses as an opportunity to strengthen the city’s public transport network. These buses could be used on routes connecting the proposed terminals with important areas across Hyderabad.

Special city routes may be introduced from the terminals once the system is developed. This could give passengers another option instead of taking private vehicles after getting off an interstate or inter district bus.

The plan is aimed at tackling a problem that has become increasingly visible as Hyderabad expands. Buses entering crowded inner city roads add to the pressure on already busy routes. Moving long distance services towards the outer parts of the city could help reduce that burden if suitable alternatives are available for passengers.

The proposal is still under consideration, and several operational details have to be worked out before implementation. However, the government sees the terminal based model as a possible step towards a more organised public transport system for Hyderabad.
