Hyderabad Regional Ring Road South Segment Faces Delay

The Hyderabad Regional Ring Road project, seen as a major boost for Telangana’s transport and industrial growth, has run into a fresh hurdle with the proposed alignment of its southern section still awaiting approval from the central government.

The delay has put the South Segment on hold for now. Telangana wants the Centre to bring the southern portion under a suitable central scheme so that construction of both sections can move forward at the same time.

The northern section of the Regional Ring Road is already being taken up through the National Highways Authority of India under the Bharatmala Pariyojana programme. The state government is seeking a similar arrangement for the southern section.

The proposed South Segment is expected to stretch for around 201 kilometres, connecting Tangadpally in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district with Sangareddy. The six lane greenfield expressway is planned to pass through the proposed Future City and link several important locations across the region.

According to the proposal, the road would connect 55 areas spread across seven districts. Once completed, it is expected to provide a faster route around Hyderabad and improve links between industrial, residential and commercial zones.

However, land acquisition has emerged as one of the major challenges. Around 2,010 hectares of land may be required for the southern section, making the process both extensive and time consuming.

The pending alignment approval has added another layer of uncertainty. Until the Centre gives its clearance, the state cannot move ahead with the project at the expected pace. As a result, there has been little progress on the ground for the South Segment.

The RRR is being planned as an important piece of Telangana’s future transport network. The project is expected to reduce pressure on roads closer to Hyderabad while creating better connectivity between districts surrounding the city.

The southern section is particularly important because of its proposed connection to the Future City. Better road access to the area could support the movement of people, goods and businesses as the planned development expands.

For the Telangana government, getting the alignment cleared and securing a suitable central funding or implementation framework are now key steps. The state has been pushing for both portions of the RRR to be developed without a major gap between their construction schedules.

Until those decisions are taken, however, the South Segment remains in a waiting phase. The project’s eventual progress will depend largely on the Centre’s response to the alignment proposal and the subsequent land acquisition process.
