JNTU Hyderabad Grace Marks Row Reaches High Court

The Telangana High Court has sought an explanation from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Hyderabad over the different grace marks given to students under various academic regulations.

The matter came before Justice Juvvadi Sridevi on Thursday during the hearing of a petition filed by students challenging the university’s decision.

The petition concerns students under the R18, R21 and R22 regulations. According to the petitioners, JNTU Hyderabad awarded 0.5 percent grace marks to students covered under the R18 and R21 regulations. However, students under R22 were given only 0.15 percent.

The students argued that the difference was unfair, particularly because the Covid period affected academic activities. They pointed to online classes and network related difficulties faced by students during that period.

The petitioners have asked the university to extend the same 0.5 percent grace marks to R22 students as well. They said students under the newer regulation should also receive consideration similar to those covered under R18 and R21.

After hearing the matter, the High Court directed JNTU Hyderabad to explain the basis for its decision on the grace marks. The university’s response is expected to clarify why different percentages were applied to the three batches.
